Thank you Myanmar (Burma)

Sometimes innovation dies.  A person's work can go on to have a life of it's own,   but the raw spark of energy that brings innovation to life, comes and goes.   Saw Yu Wai, my beloved co-founder of DNA Guide, was such a spark.

Saw Yu came to Silicon Valley from Burma and finished a Masters in GIS at San Jose State in the early 90's.  She worked on many of the very first web based maps (Stanford Campus map, City of Oakland Crime Map, Sex Offender Map for Santa Clara County) and went on to build hundreds of prototypes over the years.  More recently she was working on 3D spatial & topological analysis of full genomes.  Her last project was a map of her own tumor dnapancreas.com

We were good friends for 17 years.  The last time I saw her we shared how lucky we felt as women to have our autonomy and the freedom to build whatever we wanted.  By far, the most joyful and satisfying moments of my career was time spent working side by side with her.  I'm devastated by her departure

Saw Yu was brilliant and kind, forever generous with her time and expertise.  She will be missed!

DNA Guide for Genome Management

Dynamic Genome Mapping Software

Health IT networks can use their existing facilities mapping infrastructure to deliver genomic maps at scale.

For Health IT Administrators

Allows organizations to apply rules for managing interpretation and access down to the base pair level for various types of user groups - providing a foundation for deploying real time patient consent.

For Researchers and Pathologists

Enables enterprise-wide spatial/topological analysis across multiple tracks of genomic data along with the ability to easily add annotation for complex selection sets of markers at the entire genome level..

For Health Services Providers

Places genetic data in format allowing for quicker adoption by medical professionals - making DNA analysis and interpretation more accessible and less expensive.

For Patients

Enables patients to participate in the management of their genetic data -  with the proper level of guidance offered the moment a patient goes to access any marker of their genetic data.

Team - DNA Guide

Alice Rathjen - Founder, CEO
Alice is passionate about building genomics tools for patient engagement.  She advocates that dynamic consent to genomic data is a critical for building genomic research at scale.   Her initial concept with DNA Guide won the Kaufman Business Idea Award for Women in Science & Engineering.   She studied  ethics at UC Davis and Stanford with later technical training in Geographic Information Systems.  Her  slideshare presentations on genomics have exceeded 45,000 views.

Saw Yu Wai – Director of  Research and Development (title retired)
Saw Yu Wai deployed some of the earliest web based GIS applications in California with over 25 years experience in the field..   She's a master at building first version proto-types using cutting edge GIS technologies (2D and 3D).   With DNA Guide she has taken GIS mapping software to a new level.  Her last project was DNApancreas.com

William Kimmerly, Ph.D. - Chief Scientist
Bill Kimmerly is a 20-plus year veteran in the biotechnology and bioinformatics fields with research focus on genomic technologies. He has held leading research and management positions in both public and private sector organization such as Glaxo Smith Kline, Novartis, Ceres, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Department of Energy Joint Genome Institute, and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. His expertise is in technologies for large-scale DNA sequencing, gene expression profiling, and proteomics, as well as software integration and analytic tool development that allows knowledge extraction from large, complex data sets. Bill received a B.Sc. in Biochemistry from University of British Columbia in 1982 and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from University of California – Berkeley in 1988.

Xavier Thomas – Director of Product Development
In his 10+ years of bringing software products to market, Xavier has developed pragmatic, results-oriented programs.   While a Senior Producer for the LBi group, he managed million dollar marketing budgets for companies such as British Telecom and McKinsey & Co.. Xavier is a serial entrepreneur, bringing strong startup experience to this venture as well as past successes, such as Redspeak, (rich media strategy and development), and Dream Village (teaching kids how to be better global citizens).
